THE SPARK!
Over 10 years ago, a small local law firm decided they wanted to “do something nice” for a woman in their office undergoing treatment for cancer. The decided to send she and her family away on a vacation before her next round of treatment began. I know you are thinking “what a wonderful idea”, well, you are absolutely right and this random act of kindness for our loved one became the Spark!
MORE THAN IT SEEMS:
As so often is the case, this extremely kind gesture really gave so much more than anyone could have realized, Not only did this provide a wonderful chance to get away from it all and refuel before going back into the next treatment, the best way to put it is that this trip “made room”. It made room for some of the things that had gotten lost in the shuffle of living with cancer; laughter, games, silly conversations with the kids, splashing in the pool, floating on a raft, great pictures and memories. It made room for more fun by changing the focus for 7 days. This one kind act shifted the focus of this family’s life from managing their lives with cancer to experiencing something new together and simply enjoying one another.
FAST FORWARD:
Years later we being fueled by watching loved one’s face cancer diagnosis and treatment we began to have a deep desire to “do something” to help strengthen women facing these struggles. We committed to re-igniting the spark and formed the One Week Foundation.
ABOUT US:
The One Week Foundation is committed to providing one week of respite for a woman and her loved one’s at a vacation home. The purpose of the week is to provide the opportunities for women and their support systems to share an experience focused on life, laughter, love and relaxation.
Our mission is fueled by the HOPE and BELIEF that in creating a week centered on spending quality time with loved ones, bonds of support are strengthened and women are re-empowered to face the challenges that lie ahead.
We send woman undergoing cancer treatment and 4 of their loved one’s away for a week to a fabulous vacation home. We work with local business to provide opportunities to experience the best each vacation area has to offer in terms of activities, meals and entertainment. The week is focused on fun and relaxation to help refuel for the road ahead.
Our vacation homes are donated by families looking to give back One Week to a family facing cancer. It is through these kind donations that we determine our locations and time frame for our respite availability.
